I can't find any information that directly tells me what exactly I need to do to go from Vista Basic to Windows 7. I'm not too bothered whether its an upgrade or full version I need to buy, although an upgrade would be nice because of the price. I've read in places that you can't, or its very difficult to, upgrade from Basic.

Please help. Thanks in advance

This chart tells you which versions of Windows 7 you can upgrade to from different versions of Vista. The only problem is that you can not upgrade from a 32-bit version of Vista to a 64-bit version of Win7.

There should be an option somewhere during the installation process to either upgrade or do a custom (clean) installation.

I don't believe you can upgrade from Vista Basic - you would need to do a fresh install. I can't imagine retailers giving away free upgrades of Windows 7 with Vista Basic machines either. Upgrade paths - * Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium * Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional * Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate

Just go to the Microsoft website, if you can do it, you can do it from there.
