If you want to stay with Red Hat Enterprise Linux you may want to install CentOS 5.5 http://www.centos.org/ . CentOS is Red Hat without support.

You can also choose a different distro: http://distrowatch.com/

Personally I would boost the ram another 512MB to increase the performance and be allowed to run many of the different Linux Distributions. Even though 512 is enough in most cases it may run a little slow at times. I run PCLinusOS 2009-1 kde dual boot with Windows Xp, which is downloaded through torrents. I didn't like the 2009-2 version. Ubuntu is the one most recommended and Mint Linux for lower end computers (which is debain and Ubuntu based) Wish you the best and enjoy.

I don't know about the FREE versions BUT i know that there Latest Distros. BTW, you never mentioned on what kind of Linux flavor or a certain individual Distribution for there's about at least 35 different kinds of Llinux OS! Try Ubuntu 10.04 (Jaunty Jackal-ope), Linux Mint 9 Isadora, Fedora 13, Cent OS for starters. Here's awebsite that you could go but have to buy the certain Linux OS that you want or fancied (This will cost you a very expensive $1.99 to $2.99 tops per CD + $1.99 for S&H): www.shoplinuxonline.com

There are literally several hundred linux distros and they each have their own schedule for new versions.

Red hat is now an enterprise (business) distribution and not available for free. It looks like the latest version is Version 6 Beta 2.
