Do I need to completely restart my backup from Windows 7?

I was backing up my laptop to an External HD last night using Backup and Restore on Windows 7. I thought I had left the settings for my laptop to keep it on all night and not hibernate but I woke up this morning and it had hibernated and thus ended my backup.

Since it won't let me restart my backup from where I had left off, do I need to completely restart the backup and delete the files on my External HD so it can make new files? I tried resuming and it started making duplicates of the files I had already backed up.

Your best bet is to delete the files that were made by the interrupted backup and restart the backup after setting the laptop to not hibernate or sleep. Hibernate and sleep are 2 different modes, disable them both.

Also, run the laptop on line power. Under win-7 you can set the machine to only hibernate automatically when running from the battery. See the power options item in the control panel window.

And do not remove the battery, it will keep the PC running if there is a power glitch.

Ive used the Windows 7 Backup it takes forever. I've never used it unattended if its making duplicates its best to start again from the beginning. You could however disable hibernation. This site tells you how Windows 7 Forum and the very knowledgeable and helpful Brink (Shaun)

I will suggest you to completely backup your system in order to avoid confusion with your earlier backup as it was interrupted in middle of the backup process.
