WINDOWS DOS or 95!!! Just kidding...

I would say xp or vista as long as your pc can handle them. Most programs are made for windows and you may not have much luck on linux software unless you know what you are doing with it. But I would recommend Linux if your pc is older and doesnt have alot of ram or hard disk space as it will perform better than windows in that situation.

For the average person, Mac OS or Windows is the best solution. Which is better for you depends on your preference and to a certain extent on what you will be doing. Mac's have always been seen as more stable and just working better, but a major part of the reason for that is you can't just buy any piece of hardware or software and use it on a Mac, there are very strict standards for what will work. Also, the small market share for Macs helps make it safer because fewer people are trying to hack it.

If you're going to choose Windows, choose XP. Vista looks nice, but it's not really anything revolutionary and it's not really ready for prime time - besides the fact the Vista requires more system resources.

If you're going to be dealing with servers and back-end networking, some form of Linux is probably your best bet, but I won't get into that discussion because I don't know much about Linux.

for personal computing: OS X

for server: solaris and linux (gentoo and ubuntu) and bsd depending on what you want to do and how much time you are ready to spent on it

Windows XP is Really better, very best. 80% people like this. If you don't like this then use windows vista 10% people like this at this time. If you don't like this also then use mac os. it has 10% like from people.
