I want to replace windows 7 on my laptop with Ubuntu. I have a 16GB Kingston USB drive. Can someone detail me it step by step, because I'm confused with anything I find on the web and the official ubuntu site, and I consider myself tech-savvy.

If you can't follow that, then I don't know if I would consider you tech-savvy.

After you get your usb in a bootable state, you restart your computer and install from usb and follow the on-screen instructions.

for the purpose of understanding, the general process is this:

(it will delete all data on your usb stick)

1. download the linux operating system .iso installer file. i386 = 32-bit, amd64 = 64-bit.

2. the .iso installer file has to be put onto the usb stick using a special tool, like unetbootin.

3. switch computer on, press a key to enter the bios and choose boot device, or press a different key to get a one-time boot device selection menu.

4. wait a couple of minutes for the operating system to load from the usb stick. test how it runs and works by using the try mode, letting the desktop load without installing.

5. if everything seems ok, you can find the icon/menu item for installing it.

6. there is a simple installtion wizard to follow if you are merely wanting to erase everything on your hard drive and install a linux operating system over it.

if you only want to delete one drive/partition, then you need to choose the something else option in the wizard. this will require manual partitioning, but its simple once you know how. a default install create:

ext4 mounted at /

swap (1 1/2 times the size of your ram, or just 4 gb should do if you dont want to use hibernate)

in case you examine the education for setting up win 8 it tells you to not setting up it on a productions computing gadget, meaning DON"T setting up it on a working laptop or computing gadget it rather is in use each and daily in case you install it then that is going to format the not common force and you will lose each and every thing win 7 and ubuntu some one has already lost each and every thing they put in win 8 the day gone by and it crashed on him so he tried to bypass returned to homestead windows 7 yet could not homestead windows 8 completely wiped his not common force he lost the production facility restoration partition homestead windows 8 is for MS equipment testers that's the 1st beta launch meaning it is going to have various bugs in it and lacking hardware drivers
