Question:
how to install ubuntu 10.10 netbook using JUST a usb thumb drive?
2011-01-03 14:02:12 UTC
i have a hp mini 110 i think it has an intel atom 1.6 ghz cpu 1.5 gb ram and a 220 gb hard drive
i have no access to a cd drive and no cd i just need an installation guide and a ubuntu mirror for a usb/thumb drive. can someone please provide an acceptable link? also the thumb drive is a brand new 8gb sandisk. my netbook HAS NO OPERATING SYSTEM CURRENTLY INSTALLED, i'm not quite sure if this is an advantage or disadvantage.

all of the components are in working order

when i start my computer up it just flashes the HP logo and "for trouble shooting press f9" in the bottom left hand corner after that it just goes to a black dos screen with a blinking line in the top right hand corner and nothing else.

so can anyone help me? i need it for school tommorow!

it came with windows 7 preinstalled but it crashed so now there is no operating system and i have NO recovery disk so i figured why not install a new operating system

The Ubuntu site has instructions for creating a bootable USB drive.Click on the "Show me how" box.

You say the system crashed and has no OS installed. Do you mean that the hard drive failed? If so, you won't be able to install ANY OS to it; the hard drive will have to be replaced. If it is still under warranty then that should not cost you anything, though don't expect one day turnaround. You can, however, run Ubuntu from the thumb drive until you can get a replacement hard drive.

download the cd image and download a program called unetbootin. this will install a bootloader on the thumb drive that will make the cd image you saved to it bootable, you can't just copy the cd image's contents because it wasn't designed for that. this way of doing your task is a bit easier since i don't like tracking down pend drive images. the rest should be self explanitory

i wouldn't suggest ubuntu for a netbook since it wasn't designed with the power management feature for a netbook and desktop interfaces can be a bit tricky, i would have to suggest EASYPEASY it's an ubuntu variant that was designed for netbooks

I just had this problem with my other computer which is so weird..You have to make your flash drive bootable..you can do this by doing some stuff in command prompt..

LINK:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98xlSjTyCaQ

Follow those directions and then, you need to go to computer and locate your hard drive then, go to the folder named windows try to copy all of those files and paste them onto your hard drive..

then go to your new computer and hit every function button until sometthing pops up that has alot of stuff on it like the time the boot section and everything! you need to go to the boot section and move usb flash drive to number one by using f7 and f8 i think..it will have the directions on the side..

so know stick it in your comppuuter and try to boot up and install it from that..

if that doesn't work, you need to by a new operating system and make your flash drive bootable from the video again..i am assuming you have another computer that you made this question with..so make you flash drive bootable by doing the video again and then you can go to computer and go to your cd drive and copy all of the files and paste all of the files then stick it in your computer (making sure your boot options are available) and I hope that it works

Go to another computer that has access to the Internet. It'll need to be Linux or Windows, not Mac. Then download this software: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

That program will automagically configure your thumb drive to install whatever OS you choose from the menu (choices include Ubuntu, Mint, FreeBSD, Fedora, etc etc).
