why do you want an anti-virus for linux ?

there are no 'in the wild' virus's for linux,

the only reason for an anti-virus on linux is to scan attachments to and from windows machines,

all you will be doing is helping stop the distribution of windows virus's - if windows users cannot protect their own machine then why should you do it ?

We'd have to know what version of Linux you are running is it Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSUSE, Mandriva, Neptune, Arch, etc....

If you want an anti-virus when it comes to Linux all are pretty equal i use ClamAV which you can easily install. Windows viruses won't harm Linux at all and in the last decade there have been a total of 40 viruses that affect Linux. You'd have to go out of your way to get a virus on Linux...Mac gets more viruses.

To install ClamAV just type (in Ubuntu or Mint running Gnome) in Terminal.

"apt-get install clamav" (yes leave out the quotation marks)

Done.

And it scans very fast in command line.

Linux has it's own anti virus program called Clam and can be installed from the package management program by typing clam in the search box. It runs in the background and you never have to see it.

We need more info.

Which version of linux are you using?

What format is the format of the file that you downloaded? .zip .deb .rpm .tar.bz ?

If it is in the format of .exe you; that is a windows file format and you cannot run it in linux.

If you feel that you need to run an antivirus in linux you should check what is available in the repositories that your version of linux offers.

Good luck

try kopete as an IM, your equipment supervisor will positioned them in a folder obtainable from what passes for the commencing up menu else try beginning up a terminal/command instantaneous and typing 'kopete' to get it going you purely would desire to adhere with it for slightly after which you will get used on your new OS

if it was a .zip file then you will need to extract it first, then install it. i think avast use their own installation program, so you will need the linux or mac edition

Assuming you are using Ubuntu or Suse, see the instructions here:

http://www.easy-ubuntu-linux.com/add-ubuntu-software.html

If you are using RedHat, try yum.
