Linux is an operating system, which system provides the interface between the hardware and software on your computer. I recommend the one that best supports your hardware and software needs, although this will probably be Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, or PCLinuxOS.

Windows, Linux, and Mac all have strengths and weaknesses: games are probably best played in Windows right now. Mid range art, typesetting, video editing, etc are best suited to a Mac. Linux is the most efficient and effective platform for office work and internet use.

You may disagree: try 'em all and see for yourself.

Linux is a wonderful platform, the operating system is based on GNU tools (Gnu's Not UNIX), which provide a set of standard ways to handle and use the system. All GNU tools are open source, so they can be installed on any system.

There are a large number of Linux implementations, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, SuSE and Mandriva, which are by far the most popular Linux systems are generally considered easy to handle for the beginning user, the following are very good choices for novices:

Fedora Core

Debian

SuSE Linux

Mandriva (former MandrakeSoft)

Knoppix: an operating system that runs from your CD-ROM, you don't need to install anything.

Nowday Linux has grown in popularity both at home and at work. Linux will stimulate your imagination and creativeness. You needn't be a programmer to install a package on your system. However, if you are and like doing things yourself, you will enjoy Linux all the better, since most distributions come with a complete set of development tools, allowing installation of new software purely from source code.

Try them, then you will decide which 's better for your needs. Linux? Windows? Mac?

Have a blessed New Year!

Linux is free and open source operating system. The Mac OS and Linux have similar roots (they are UNIX based). The choice of an operating system should depend on your needs. If you want to revive an old and slow PC, try running Linux. Linux is also great for servers and programming environments. If you do a lot of gaming, Windows might be the way to go. Mac has the reputation of being easy to use and a good choice for graphic design. You can try Linux on your PC without having to install anything. Just download and boot from a "Live CD" like Knoppix: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html.

Linux (pronounced LIH-nuks) is an operating system for computers, comparable to Windows or Mac OS X. It was originally created starting in 1991 by Finnish programmer Linus (pronounced LEE-nus) Torvalds with the assistance of developers from around the globe. Linux resembles Unix, an earlier operating system, but unlike Unix, Linux is open source software — that is, you can not only download and run it on your computer, but also download all the source code the programmers created to build the operating system. You can then modify or extend the code to meet your needs.

Linux runs on a wide variety of hardware platforms, from huge mainframes to desktop PCs to cell phones. It is licensed under the Free Software Foundation’s GNU Project’s GNU General Public License, version 2, which lets users modify and redistribute the software.

for a new comer, it is better to use zencafe/ zenwalk, in which u can get from below links....

Linux operating system is another operating system. There are many distributions of Linux operating system.

www.distrowatch.com tracks the famous ones. For the past one year or so, PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu have been competing with each other for the top spot. I recommend you use any one of these if you are a new comer to Linux.

In my opinion, Linux is better than Windows and Mac. Linux comes at no cost. You can make any number of copies of Linux DVDs and CDs and give it to friends and relatives. Nobody will come after you to sue you. Because it is legal to do so.

surfing the net linux is far better (virus free)

its cheaper then mac. that right there kinda shines the light on the winner. Ubuntu is now about the very best distro for beginners and beyond Its all about package managment in linux (how you install programs) and the synaptice package managment system in ubuntu based distros is the very best easiest. All linux is good most great but I would have to say ubuntu or linux mint is the best for home users

Linux as a default install is not really all that much over a windows rig, both require configurations to reach maximum potential. If you are just beginning then i suggest trying Suse 10.x in a windows vm (virtual machine "workstation").

this way you can keep ur familiar os (windoze) and then get comfy with linux at the same time ;)
