Question:
Why will my computer not allow me to download any programs from the web?

I own a new HP laptop with Vista as the operating system.
I am attempting to download ANY program onto my computer through the internet. I have tried saving/running these downloads using both IE and Firefox so it cannot be an internet setting. I cannot find an appropriate answer via the other responses on this site and have attempted all the suggestions that I did not think of myself.

The save destination is not faulty, I have set all the programs to save to either my downloads folder, or my desktop.

Not only will the files not save, they will not even just "run." So, when I attempt to run a .exe for example to download the Vuze installer, it appears to go through the process then simply disappears and does not execute the setup program at all.

I have done thorough searches on my computer for these files and they are not there...also, I have attempted disabling my firewall temporarily to see if those settings were the culprit, but once again, it did not help. Therefore the downloads are not actually making it from point A to point B!

(This was not always the case with this computer, it seems to have happened over night!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please do not answer if you are just going to repeat something that I have already stated that I have attempted.

Have you tried downloading in Safe Mode With Networking? The symptom could be an indication of malware preventing you from downloading anti-malware (which would imply it was vulnerable to detection and elimination by anti-malware). Running in Safe Mode With Networking sometimes keeps malware from defending itself.

Alternatively you might download some anti-malware on another machine, copy it to a flash drive or such, and load it on your affected machine. You might want to change the name of the downloaded file and the executable (.exe) to throw any malware off the scent there, too.

To get into Safe Mode with Networking:

1. Log out and reboot your machine.

2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.

3. Select Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.

4. Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password.

5. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different.

6. When you're finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Good luck.

It could be a Virus that is preventing it. Usually it should let you download programs from the web. It might be a software problem. I would go to safe mode, and see

whats up. If the problem still rises in safe mode, then something is wrong.

But if the problem is in Windows, then it might be just a virus or some software issue.
