I want to run Linux on my PC in addition to Windows XP. I had Linux once before but a tech friend of mine set up a dual boot feature for me. I since bought a new PC and of course it came with Windows, the Home XP version. Can anyone out there advise me how to do this? Why? I know for sure that Linux runs better; and if you research some of the new Vista "bugs" being reported----well haviing Linux seems like a smart way to go. TKS

You can find damn small linus or knoppix they will boot off of a disk and you never have to install it on your hard drive.

I suggest to go to linux web sight. Also Linux has deloped an os called xandros which is about like windows. They have home edition, premium and desktop profssional. There you can download a free trial verson for 30 days. One can run this os in the dual boot also.

Two possibilities.

First - Your current system hard drive is partitioned. then you can format that partition and install another operating system.

If it is not partition, then - purchase a small hard drive and install your second operating system on to that drive.

THE MOST WORK - Back up your data to a DVD/CD, put your original Operating System disk into the computer and reinstall. Select NEW INSTALL (READ THE SCREEN)

Delete all partitions, create three partitions, two should be 20GB each.

Complete installation, install motherboard utilities and drivers, anti virus and firewall.

Install secon Operating System into the 2nd 20GB partition, Install motherboard drivers and utilities from the motherboard CD.

Go to www.microsoft.com - UPDATE and let this site update your computer. You have to boot into each software before going to Microsoft.

To place Active@ KillDisk Pro onto a floppy disk type the following at the command prompt:

COPY G:\KILLDISK.EXE A:

COPY G:\DOS4GW.EXE A:

The above assumes that the G:\ drive is the bootable CD-ROM drive and the A:\ drive is the floppy disk drive.

DOS4GW.EXE is a required file for Active@ KillDisk, Active@ UNERASER and Active@ Disk Image.

That's all right, just be sure to install windows first before Linux(I think that's the correct order).

P.S.I didn't know that there was a software for dual booting. I just know that installing a multiple os ,automatically gives you a choice for booting.
