I use windows and I don't understand why people use linux. the only reason anyone ever gives me is that it doesn't get viruses and runs faster. my brother has linux and i have windows 7 and my computer doesn't have viruses because of this magical new thing called antivirus software. i have downloaded all kinds of crap and i haven't gotten a single virus and my pc runs MUCH faster than my brothers computer. so I don't think linux is any good. so why do people use it so much?

It's because it's open source. You can simply make it run the way you want (hacking) and the guys who makes it (a whole bunch of teams out there in the world) wouldn't care.

Linux comes with most of the features you need for everyday use and a lot of softwares out there made for Linux are free and it can actually play Windows softwares if you use WINE and play Windows games with Cedega. Most free softwares that we use on a Windows machine were actually designed for Linux.

Another reason is that Linux is quite easy to use (depending on which one you use) and since Linux is free, why wouldn't you want it.

Linux is actually faster watch this video:

You haven't got a virus because you haven't stumbled upon a website with viruses. some viruses can actually get past anti-viruses. (My computer has been infected a lot of times and I even use one of the best ranking anti-viruses (it was payed as well) out there and even my little brother's computer got viruses and he has a free antivirus).

Linux comes with more choices and has much lower specs requirements and some are more stable than Windows itself.

Did you know a lot of the latest smartphones run on Linux (Android) and are the 1st to defeat the iPhone's iOS?

Well, in Linux I like the fact that it is open, you can pretty much do anything you can think up in Linux. The problem I have with Microsoft, is the you lose your privacy when using their OS. This stared with Windows XP with the WGA software. The fact that the NSA worked on Windows 7 is not very appealing to me either. They say that very little information from your system is being transmitted to Microsoft, yet we really don't know what is being transmitted do to the fact that you can't look through the code. There was a big controversy with whether or not windows 7 has a back door built into it by the National Security Agency.

To be honest I don't see what the big deal with having the freedom to chose what OS one uses. Windows is not that great, that is probably why Linux dominated 91% of Super Computers. You could let a Linux Desktop have an uptime of 2 or more years. The truth is that "Windows 7 is the best OS" is merely your opinion and nothing more. I could say that Fedora is the Best OS ever, or Gentoo because in Gentoo you have to set everything up so that everything runs at peak efficiency. You will never find two Gentoo Machines that are the same.

Kernel 2.6.35 has some awesome additions: http://www.h-online.com/open/features/What-s-new-in-Linux-2-6-35-1047707.html

Kernel 2.6.36 will have apparmor implemented directly into the kernel: http://www.h-online.com/open/features/Kernel-Log-2-6-36-development-and-new-stable-kernels-and-drivers-1053755.html

haha well ok ^^

First it depends on what PC you have, and what PC does your brother have. If you have a supercomputer and he has a shitty one, it's normal if your runs faster :). I never use antivirus and I rarely rarely get any virus, antivirus makes your pc slower, thats 100% that's why I avoid using it. On the other hand Linux doesn't eat all your resources, check how much RAM does win 7 need for instance to be stable? Linux is free =) you don't have to pay anything, It's open source, if your good at programming, you can even rewrite parts you like, whereas Windowses are all closed, you cannot change anything at all. And lastly, for example if you want to run a server, check how much does a windows server cost, and with linux you can run it free and it's way more stable, it crashes less and requires less maintanence.

Well you cannot play games on linux that well, however there are programs now, which allows you to do so. You can just type in google win vs linux or something similar, I'm sure you can read enough info about it =)

Hope it helped^_^

Linux is free and open source meaning anyone can take the source code and make it their own operating system, that's why there are so many distributions of it. There's also a lot of free software available for all kinds of users. Not only that but Linux is fast. secure and reliable. What more could you want from a free operating system?

The major difference is that Linux is a free operating system and you have to pay for Windows. So why pay for something you can get for free AND have no viruses?

i could say Ubuntu, that's amazingly easy to apply for a beginner, in spite of the fact that it nonetheless has the means to do very stronger issues additionally GNOME is a working laptop or computing gadget environment, like KDE. Ubuntu comes with GNOME. in case you like a extra homestead windows-like environment you need to use Kubuntu it quite is Ubuntu with the KDE environment fairly than GNOME. a stable difficulty with Ubuntu is which you would be able to alter between the variations very quite, purely employing synaptic equipment supervisor (a software you will use plenty in case you get Ubuntu or Debian) you are able to replace computing gadget environments and upload the best factors of each and every version with purely some clicks. additionally Ubuntu is predicated off debian, so as that they are comparable yet ubuntu is designed to be extra consumer-friendly.
