Are you a MS Word expert? Would you help me in shooting this problem?
Of late, when I open a Word file, it shows as messasge:

Word cannot open the existing (Normal)
and I have to click ok to proceed.

And when I close the file, there is again a message:

The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file.
When I press Yes, then there is a message:
You cannnot save when the file in use by another process. Try sasving the file with a new name.

I have Windows XP and Office XP.

This is a very annoying problem. Previously, I did not have this type of messages when opening and closing the Word files. Could you suggest a solution?

hi there

the file that seems to be the problem it normal.dot

it is a template file whch stores the borders, fontsize and little things like that as a default, making it "normal".

If there is something already opening this template, then there will be problems as you are experiencing.

The best solution is to uninstall OfficeXP from the add/remove section (Control Panel -> Add/remove programs ->Microsoft Office XP -> remove). Do this with all Versions of office software, (OfficeXP, Frontpage, Visio, Infopath, Onenote, Access)

Now go to your programs folder (usually C:\Program Files), and locate Microsoft Office. Delete this folder. This will permantly remove any hidden files that may remain.

Now using the disc you own, re-install all your software that you have just uninstalled. this will bring everything back to true default settings, and should work perfectly.

If there is still problems, try running a virus scan and spyware scan. these will throw up any viruses and you should remove them. then try opening your file again.

Sounds like the machine shut down incorrectly, leaving Normal.dot kind of hung up. Try this (assuming you have XP):

1. Close all copies of MS Word.

2. Go to the directory c:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

3. The Normal.dot template should be in this directory. If there is a file ~$Normal.dot (note the funny characters at the front), delete it.

4. Try Word again.

Good luck.

I think it may have something to do with the visual basic editor built into the program. Normal is the name of the template that holds VB code for any time the program is opened. Go to Tools then Macro then Visual Basic Editor and you can see if anything looks wrong.

Somehow the program was corrupted. Basically as the the others said, just reinstall MS Word. This has happened to me before.

And in case you come to Yahoo solutions searching for help it form of sounds like your grade would be kinda' low, if no longer very low, if no longer failing. Now, run alongside.

This typically is a corruption inside the MS Word engine.

Reinstall Word from the original disk and it should work fine.

It sounds like the Word program has been corrupted somehow. I would uninstall and reinstall the office suite if I were you...Sandra
