Question:
3-letter file extensions for OpenOffice.org?
2009-01-24 15:10:42 UTC
I have been working to try to figure out which file is the right one to save a document in using OpenOffice.org. I put together a file that I want to send to someone who has MSOffice and not being sure, I have multiple copies of the file with different extensions on the end.

The file I am trying to figure out was done on OpenOffice's Draw and is a slide format, so I'm assuming that it has to be one that is used by MSOffice, as well. The file choices I have are .vor, .odg., .otg, .sxd, .std and .sda

I also was trying to figure out how the Send: feature works and I am using AOL. I know that on the first screen, it asks for my email address, but then, it has a drop down menu that has POP3, IMAP and HTTP. Which, if any of those do I use and what do I enter on the next screen which is for some sort of Outgoing address (which I'm not sure, but think it might be for the Send to: address).

I just wish they'd make OpenOffice.org as easy as MSWorks use to be and not be so confusing (it seems like the person who invented this software must be a direct descendant of the guy that invented the typewriter) 8 (

Ask the recipient what format he wants - or how it will be used. Most likely will be a BMP or JPG to place in a document. Use File, Export instead of Save because Office doesn't have an equivalent application.

AOL email is different. Save the file and attach it to your AOL email the usual way.

Works is easier because it has so few options. A bit like a cookbook with only a recipe for boiled eggs. Easy to master but doesn't get you far.

File standards are pretty complex, as many are proprietary formats. I'd google each of those extensions and see what comes up. And OO isn't that complicated, and it's developed by a great team of people.

The Send feature uses your email account to send it. The "outgoing address" is your email address you would like to send it from. I'm thinking that part may actually be in your email client's setup.

MS Office does not come with anything like OpenOffice Draw. In fact Microsoft's equivalent to Draw is Visio, but it is a stand alone product.

These are the file formats that MS Visio uses

* VSD - Diagram

* VSS - Shape (originally Stencil)

* VST - Template

* VDX - Visio XML Diagram

* VSX

* VTX

If you want your friend to be able to see your drawing then send it to them as a PDF.

OpenOffice is not complicated, it simply gives you many choices that MS Office usually makes for you.

Upload it into Google Docs. From here you can email it and your friend can download in whatever format he wants.
