I've never had much luck dist-upgrading Ubuntu... My advice is to just get the 10.10 iso and install it new. The Ubuntu site has directions on how to install it to a USB drive so you can boot into it and install : )

I found 2 sets of instructions to fix you problem. The first one will probably eliminate the error but the second will go further and also update your system.

Ubuntu 8.04 will not be supported much longer and the third link will explain how to upgrade to the latest version of ubuntu. You can upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04.

Ubuntu 8.04 will not be supported after april 2011.

It is not clear what you are trying to do with the other error. Here is a link that google found. Hope this helps.

If you want to run windows games you have to run them under wine. Wine can be installed from the ubuntu repository with synaptic. Be sure to check the wine database to see which and how well the windows games run.

There are a lot of linux games that might interest you.

as suggested by Sacred a fresh install is a good way to go.

But i would go to the Ubuntu forums and do a search for the problem or join it (it's free) and post the question and give as much info that you can and anything that the errors say.

you most likely will have to do some stuff in the terminal but just copy and past the commands that are given to you.

if you do decide to go for a fresh install the try some other distro's like PinguyOS or LinuxMint . use this program to make a usb boot device http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ there are many OS's in it's list and you can also download an iso of one and use it to put it on a usb drive.

for a list of some of the more popular distro's and links to them and screen shots go here http://distrowatch.com/

if you need more help just email me.

your ubuntu is not supported anymore. 8.04 was dropped in october of 2010. the latest one now is ubuntu 10.04 ( long term support) or the latest release which is 10.10 ( not long term. However if your not tech savvy .. then forget ubuntu and get linux mint 10 IF you want java /. flash / codecs out the box. its based on ubuntu but has everything included. get the liveDVD if you have a dvd burner if not get the liveCD and burn it as an iso image ( cd image ) using braserop on your ubuntu 8.04.

Your Ubuntu is outdated, run the System>Admin>Update Manager

Back up your files first

If you don't like what you see in Ubuntu, there is always PenDriveLinux.com (need Windows) and Xubuntu with Docky (in the Software Center)

Set your Mini's BIOs to boot from USB first so you can install Xubuntu. Much better.
