Usually Linux Mint inherits the "upstream" bugs from Ubuntu, often doing their best to iron them out if possible. This time though, because they are forgoing the use of Unity, Mint 11 RC is a lot more stable than Natty Narwhal. Why? Because Unity's integration with Compiz is causing all sorts of headaches; it seems that the end user simply can't configure certain Compiz effects without unintended consequences, i.e. crashes, and of course there are the graphics drivers problems that many users have reported. My Nvidia card ran fine, it was my enabling of desktop effects in CCSM that caused the desktop to go crazy.

I've been using Mint 11 RC for five days now, no problems so far; Compiz working normal, no update breakages, etc. I've changed the theme, added around ten PPAs, installed and removed various apps, I've run gtk-recordmydesktop, everything works. The Update Manager launches quicker than before, the new Software Center looks great. A very solid, if conservative, OS. I'd say it's Mint 10 with refinements, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that.

Any Linux Mint release is only as good as its parent Ubuntu release therefore things do not bode well for Linux Mint 11 as it is based on Ubuntu 11.04 which it has to be said is dreadful. I remember similar problems with Linux Mint 6 that was based on Ubuntu 8.10 which had multiple bugs but eventually most of these were addressed so Linux Mint 6 improved because Ubuntu 8.10 had improved. All bugs in either Ubuntu 11.04 and Linux Mint 11 can be reported to Launchpad where fixes and workarounds can also be found. This may need enabling a third party ppa.

I am currently putting Linux Mint 11 RC through its paces on one of my testing Hard Drives and seeing as it is a development release it would be unfair to draw any absolute conclusions just yet.

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS which is built upon Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Long Term Support) its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 LTS then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 9 LTS can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

No, it won't be as buggy as 11.04 without updates.

In the future, though, you need to update after you install before coming to any conclusions.
