Is it a problem with XP SP 3?

Hi. I have an issue with my nephew’s laptop (which he lent me for the reason that my PC’s dying). Here’s the situation:

The laptop’s model is ECS TRANSMETA CRUSOE. It has lan, infrared, cd-rom.

System:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2
Then it says:
Powered by AMIT
Transmeta Crusoe Processor TM5600 532 Mhz, 496 MB of RAM
Then there’s a logo which says:
Manufactured and supported by: Windows XP Service Pack 3 by AMIT

I know the specs are uncompetitive, but that doesn’t bug me as I intend to purchase a high end laptop soon.

Okay, here it is.
1) With XP SP 3, it takes time to boot unlike with my dying PC, which only has SP 2. 2) Then there’s this one word document that I couldn’t open with the laptop, but when I tried opening it with my PC, it opened.
3) Also, when I was able to install a game, it was very, very slow that I ended up uninstalling it.
4) I also successfully installed another game, but it would not allow me to open.
5) Then when I open a webpage which I saved from my thumb drive, it would not open as is. Normally I can open it ‘offline’ with my PC. But with the laptop, I can’t. what I see are codes and just plain texts in a distorted manner.

Please tell me what could be the problem. I thought it has something to do with the SP 3. I tried removing it, but the self-help guides I found did not help me at all. I couldn’t find it in the add-remove programs as the guide says. Then someone told me I have to reformat it. But I don’t have any driver or restore disc to back it up.

I was also thinking it could be the specs. But my cousin’s PC has lower specs than my laptop, yet I also tried comparing the performance of his PC and my laptop, and his PC was performing better than mine.

Any opinion will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Your processor is flimsy and so is your RAM

buy a new one or you can try and defrag your drives (go to start>all programs/accessories/system tools/disk defragmenter

and also clear some stuff out

(start>all programs/accessories/system tools/disk cleanup

sp3 most likely isn't the problem although the installation may've been corrupt have you tried checkdisk?

In addition to the command line utility detailed above. It is possible to access a graphical version of the Windows XP chkdsk.

To do this:

Step One: Open "My Computer", RIGHT click on the C drive icon, choose "Properties".

Step Two: When that loads, click on the "Tools" tab, then click on the "Check Now" button in the "Error Checking" section.

Step Three: When that little window loads, place a CHECK in BOTH boxes, then click on "Start Now".

Step Four: A message will pop up saying that Error Checking will run after you restart the computer, so......Restart the computer. Error Checking will run automatically after the restart and it locks you out from doing anything until it's finished. It takes a little time to perform the task but after it's finished, it will restart into Windows automatically.

run all these on both computers, then on your laptop run windows updates again. Run windows custom updates and choose any new drivers that is presented.

From my notes

Also while your computer is in good nick you should download and install Superantispyware and Spybot –Search and Destroy, Ccleaner because when malware gets going you will not be able to access the net.

Clean Up Computer

CCleaner (about 10 minutes to install and run)

=========

google ccleaner and install it. While it installs just untick the boxes as some you dont want.

run the cleaner in windows/applications but dont tick the bottom 11 boxes in the Windows Tab.

run the registry cleaner as well, when it asks to back up the registry , allow it to do it, then clean the registry. You may have to clean the registry a few times, but you do not need to save it each time.

Also ccleaner will remove the program entry that you may have difficulty with in add/remove, or the uninstall doesn't work.

Just ensure you tick the one program and not the whole computer to delete, if you use this feature.

Superantispyware (1 hour)

===============

http://www.superantispyware.com

Has a stop homepage from being altered which is good

Can reset windows defaults in various parts

Download and run superantispyware. I was put onto this program because of an annoying popup (XP or Vista plus all OS preceding)

Install it and set the preferences to monitor your home page.

Set up tick boxes that you want in the other tabs as you require.

You don’t need to run it at startup unless you want the antispyware protection 24/7.

Note Superantispyware has powerful reset tools that will set stuff back to windows defaults.

To use these tools click preferences >repairs. This may be handy to reset IE URLS if you have annoying pop ups.

Superantispyware is a good program and remember to update it before scanning. A scan may take 45mins. Just run a scan for the first attack.

Spybot – Search and Destroy (1 hour)

=====================

Download spybot search and destroy. Through its immunize page and link to javacools spyblaster, spybot can manage activex problems which is extremely difficult for antispyware programs to find. Also just run the scan for first attack.

.

Windows Live Onecare (2-3 hours)

===================

Onecare safety scan fixes registry and finds temp files that nothing else seems to find.

Choose the Beta Edition link for vista users.

It does registry, spyware , virus , disk clean up and defrag

XP Users http://onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/defau...

Vista Users

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/center/whatsnew.htm

Run the full safety scanner, it takes a few seconds to install the scanning files but when you start the scan, it takes 2 hours or more. Let it load the scanning tools, then start the Safety Scan. So once it starts to load the safety scans' x file of x , you can leave the computer and go to bed etc.

Then at the end of the scan it asks you to set it running full time.

Think twice about setting it to run in the background as it could be another thing to slow you down. However, it may be worth while if you have no other security programs running.

Consider the following options:

I personally run Norton 360 which is full internet security and run superantispyware when I want to.

So if you don’t have a decent internet security program then perhaps run the superantispyware with your antivirus in the background.

If you sick of antivirus programs that don’t work perhaps run onecare full time and run superantispyware whenever.

Now you should be flying and Onecare has even set up a new system restore point for you.

Note onecare does other stuff as well. Click on the menus on the LHS column., but all of this is done if you click Safety Scan.

add onecare to your favourites

IE7 (2 minutes)

=======

Over time IE7 seems to set its own (or programs do) tick boxes in the advance tab.

In IE7 Tools >Internet Options >Advance Tab

Click Restore advance settings defaults button.

Then scroll the listings down to near the bottom and:

1. Tick empty temp files when browser closes (this empties the cache, which if not empty, will stop you from going online).

2. Bullet disable phishing filter (optional. Leave it on if you want that type of protection, usually for financial data like internet banking)

Delete Browser History, cookies, add ons, the whole lot regularly.

Close the browser to set the settings.

.

Phishing Filter

When first released, phishing filter slowed IE7. Apparently, Microsoft has fixed this through the windows updates. If you like you could try to run it - bullet the enable.

Only run one phishing filter program, and only run one firewall program.

.

Fixing Your Computer

Run the scans of the three programs above. If your computer is still faulty then you have to go deeper with the features mentioned.

I had an analogous problem. determine you have the main up-tp-date Sony Ericsson utility, then uninstall it completely and re-deploy it. do away with the W810i gadget from gadget supervisor till now re-installation (certainly pick Uninstall truly than disable, etc). If it nevertheless would not paintings, i became instructed to function a pretend COM port - utilising 'upload new hardware' wizard. i think of the assumption is this by some potential tricks it into working, yet i did not could circulate this a approaches :)
