The iTunes update service running on your local machine is either damaged or corrupted. First make a back up copy of your iTunes library (found in My Documents->My Music); if it makes it easier, just copy the entire iTunes folder and save it anywhere on your machine where you have enough free disk space to handle it. Next, open up the Control Panel (Start->Control Panel) and double click "Add/Remove Programs"; you'll need to wait for the list of installed applications to populate. Once the list is populated, scroll down to iTunes, then click the Remove button. After iTunes is uninstalled, we need to check the registry keys to make sure everything will be in working order: go to Start->Run and type regedit.exe and press enter. This will open the system registry editor. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER by clicking the plus sign next to it. Similarly expand Software, then scroll down the list and look for anything named Apple, Inc. or Apple Computer, Inc. If you find any of these, right mouse click them and choose Delete to remove them. After these keys have been deleted, close the registry editor and reboot your machine. When the desktop reloads, open up your internet browser and go to www.apple.com/itunes to download iTunes' latest release (10.5). Once the download and install completes, you should be good to go (and you can delete the backup copy of your library that you created earlier). On the other hand, if you don't see your library of songs in iTunes, cut the backup copy of your library/iTunes folder from the location you've save it and paste it into this location: My Documents->My Music. You will now need to import your songs one at a time into the library using your Apple ID; I realize that this is painful, but Apple has provided no way to bulk import/authorize songs - maybe they will in some future release. Once you've imported then authorized all your songs, you'll be good to go.

Best of luck.
