It would really help if you told us what version of MS-Office you are using.



In MSO 2003 and older, look for a "Reverse P" Icon, on the menu bars, and click on it ONCE. This turns off the Type-setting symbols you are seeing. I haven't used MSO 2007, but it should be similar.
