First, Windows XP will not upgrade to Windows 8. It won't even Upgrade to Windows 7. You have to install the full version, which is not an upgrade, due to there not being an upgrade path.
Second, you need to realize that "upgrade" means an existing operating system can have its files changed to the new version, hence the term "UPGRADE". You canNOT take an upgrade version of Windows (7 or 8) and install it on your Linux system and expect to have Windows as it doesn't work that way with upgrades. The upgrade software would scan your computer looking for an upgradable version of Windows and if it doesn't see it, it can't upgrade. Thus, if you were to buy an upgrade version of Windows and install it on the Linux computer, it won't upgrade because Linux is not upgradable to Windows.

To find out you can download a Windows 7 update Adviser program from Microsoft, to see if you computer is compliant, it will give you results in 32 and 64 bit and give you an idea of an update to hardware before money outlay, This program has been around since Vista was introduced, so they will have one out for 8 no doubt. Going from XP to Windows 7 or 8 is a custom install not an upgrade. Pesonally I would go for Window 7 as 8 is designed for tablets, even though it will work on laptops, I would wate until it is well and truly released.

You can use windows 8 customer preview edition in any machine, but you can not upgrade your xp to windows 8 because it is not released yet.

Well as i know upgrading from XP you'll get an installation package like ISO image or some install.exe.
I think you can just get it and either burn it to DVD or copy to some flash drive and install it on another machine.
Good luck with installation!!!
