I think it has something to do w/ the flash player. I read that the newest version (which i downloaded) isn't compatible. So I downloaded the version it said to & when I open the file all it is is text. I don't know codes or anything. Is there an easier way? Or can someone please help me figure this out!!!

Installing Flash in Linux is a bit trickier than it is in Windows. Follow these instructions:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/flash

You don't say what version of Ubuntu you're running. This has information on 8.04, 8.10, and 9.04. You're probably running one of those. But the instructions are different for each one, so make sure you find out which version and use the proper tutorial.

many codecs are not automatically installed as they are proprietary, and some are illegal in some countries.

If you go to the 'Media Ubuntu' site at http://www.medibuntu.org/ you will find instructions for adding this repositoryto your list, and instructions about installation for watching encrypted DVDs, etc.

Please note that watching an encrypted DVD that you have bought on a Linux computer is illegal in the USA.

In the most recent version of Ubuntu trying to open a media file will result in you being asked what codec you wish to install to play it.

if it is flash videos on the web then the other answers should have you covered but if you are talking about (or just for future reference) use VLC for any other video aplications. It has just about every codec you could want and therefore plays just about everything.

good luck

go to applications menu

click on add/remove

Have it show all applications

then search for flash

I would suggest selecting "Macromedia Flash Plugin", "GStreamer ffmpeg video plugin", and "Ubuntu restricted extras"
