I have just discovered OpenOffice and wondered if it was a good (and free!) substitute for Mirosoft Office.

Yes, it's compatible with Vista - I've been running it on Vista Ultimate for several months now. It's a decent substitute for MS Office if you're not a demanding user. It lacks some of the polish, but it gets the job done for basic word processing, spreadsheets and presentations.

I've been using OpenOffice instead of MS Office for about three years now. While early versions had occasional glitches incorrectly drawing figures, I haven't seen any consequential differences since I switched to OpenOffice 2.0.
When I save documents in MS formats (.doc, .rtf) people don't even appear to notice that I'm not using MS Office.
While I can't guarantee that absolutely every document and absolutely every MS Office feature will be replicated exactly in OpenOffice, the overwhelming majority of day-to-day documents seem to be handled just fine and I can't remember encountering a glitch in the last several years.
Starting with OpenOffice 2.0 I've taken documents like my resume and done round-trip editing (create document in OpenOffice, save and edit in MS Office, read it back in OpenOffice; also have done it the other way around) and had no problem.
I don't have Vista myself, but you probably want to use OpenOffice version 2.2 or 2.3.

Yes, most XP products are compatible with Vista, except for games, maybe. When I play Diablo 2 or Starcraft, they do not run very well. So, yes, it is compatible.
How and where did you get OpenOffice free? I might want to use it.

Version 2 is compatible with vista; the older ones aren't.
