Well yeah I know Windows, OS X, and Linux, but are there any other popular operating systems? I've heard of Pi but don't know what it is... So I mean I guess you could answer that too

For computers, for most consumers, you only see Windows 7 or 8, and Max OS X. Some people use different versions of Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Debian, etc). Another popular OS (I believe it's run by Oracle, the people who made Java) is Solaris. There's ChromeOS, and many others.

For phones, the most common ones are iOS (great variety, runs perfectly almost always, incredibly secure) Android (arguably better variety, often has issues, not secure, hugely customizable and expandable), Windows Mobile, Ubuntu Mobile, Blackberry, and so forth.

Pi isn't an OS, I think you're referring to Raspberry Pi which is a low-powered computer the size of a credit card that runs Linux or whatever you can actually put on it. Raspberry Pi works best with the Linux version Raspbian.

There are operating systems that people don't know about and most of those are one someone has tried to create and most only have limited functions and abilities. They would be suited for some one who doesn't do a lot on a computer. They are not popular so you would have to search them out on the Internet. I've tried a couple of them but would not recommend them to any one. Most of these you will find in odd places because they are not main stream.

regardless of what you may read or be told by so called experts they are ALL based on DOS, windows is GUI to DOS and later windows sit on a 32bit DOS , DOS is the basic disk operating system which moves all the ones and zeroes around in a way the cpu can understand x86 processors have had virtually the same instruction set for 30 years and the pentiums had so many bugs that NASA had to use 486 processors until the problems were eventually sorted

Windows is Goliath, Linux is David. Windows will only install on Drive C, Linux can be installed on a flash-drive. Windows is Buy, Linux is Free. I have many Linux distros installed on sticks, Mint, Ubuntu, Zorin. Each have pros/cons. But, Linux offers more free apps. Check this site.

Oversimplifying, there's Windows and UNIX.

ChromeOS, Android, OSX, iOS are all UNIX-like, Google use the Linux kernel, Apple use the Mach kernel. Windows is a mix of DOS, WIN/OS2, VAX/VMS, and RT (.NET).

Oh boy what a kettle of fish you have opened here. Everyone will be spewing drivel about how good and how bad "so and so" operating system is. Here is a comprehensive list of OS since 1951. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_operating_systems each had their good points and bad points.
