Question:
On Photoshop CS5 how do you merge text layers & copy text FX's?

Hey guys, I have two photoshop questions. My first one is, how can I merge a text layer with a picture layer. I tried highlighting them both, then right clicking, but there was no merge layer options. The next question is, how do I copy text effects? Like what I mean is, I made a text, and I added text effects, and I wanted to copy it to another project, and it copied the text, but without the effects. There are reasons I need to be able to merge layers with text, because I have the picture in a specific spot, and I don't wanna replace it because it took a while to get it in that perfect spot. Also for my text effects, I spent an hour editing it, making it look perfect, I don't wanna have to copy all the settings.

"[H]ow can I merge a text layer with a picture layer?"

The text layer needs to be rasterized (formerly called simplified in other versions of Photoshop). To do this, in the Layer window, right click on the text and then click on "Rasterize Type." This will make it so that you cannot edit the text anymore, however, so make sure the text says exactly what you want it to say before you do this.

Once it is rasterized, you can combine it with other layers.

Also in the Layer window, you right click on the layer that has the effects you want, in this case the text. Click on "Copy Layer Style." Then, in the layer window on the other project, right click on the layer that you want to have the copied effect. Click on "Paste Layer Style."

Hope this helped =)

You have to simplify the text layer; if you try to edit it something pops up saying how it needs to be converted. If it doesn't for some reason, just use the selector tool to select it and either copy via layer or just paste it into a new transparent layer and delete the text layer.

Not sure about the text effects, sorry. Could you save it as a PNG so that you can keep any transparency, and just add it as an extra layer, or does it need to be workable?

You must install the font on the computer at your school to maintain its editing capabilities. On the other hand, if you really want to make it an image, rasterize the layer by right clicking the text layer and choose rasterize. I would recommend just saving your whole work as a jpeg though, and keep the photoshop file with editable text.
