I am running debian linux. I am a newb. I am looking for a way to download software, a place I can download where I can tell if the program is good or not. Under windows, I could go to download.com and look at reviews and how everyone rated a particular program so I would know a little about the program before I downloaded it. I am looking for the same using linux. Right Now I am running Synaptic Package Manager, but I hate it. lol. Yes, it is more effecient if I some how magicly knew of all the programs I will ever need and use APT-Get, but .... I am not a wizard... So.... Is there some magical software place for newbs or am I going to have to download every program ever known to find a decent file manager? (example, Type file manager in the package manager and you get TONS of file managers, I am looking for a bloated one that will display the picture if I click on the picture, also give me the ability to sort easily besides having to dig around in the view menu for a while before I can just simply just arrange my files by type......

Debian has a software center made just for debian. See the first link.

The second link might help you to find out some info about some apps before you install them, just be sure that they are compatible with debian before you install them, and install them through debian if possible.

You can also google the name of some app that you want more info on and that might bring up more info.

That is normal that you do not know how to work in linux the way you do in windows because windows is different and there is a learning curve. Debian has a lot of good documentation that can help you to learn to use linux more efficiently. See the third link.

Hope this helps.

I use Debian 6 and it has a package manager that's a clone of Ubuntu's. If it's not installed, I think you can get it in Synaptic (it's called software-center)
