I'm thinking about switching to Ubuntu but I would like to know if the fn keyboard shortcuts like to adjust volume, brightness, etc will work on Ubuntu or is there some software I need to install beforehand?

They do on my ASUS laptop and Samsung netbook.  The best way to find out is to make your Ubuntu live CD and boot from it to the live desktop.  Then you can play around with it and find out what works and what doesn't before committing to the installation.

Depending on your make and model of computer and the version of Ubuntu you use, there could be hitches with some function keys. Mostly they should work OK, but any problems can be solved by searching the Ubuntu forums.

For example:

"If you’re running Ubuntu 10.10 or 11.04 on laptop, you might get a problem that fn key combination to change screen brightness is not working. Here’s a solution for nvidia laptop with this problem:

First edit xorg.conf in terminal with the command:

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

And then find the Section “Device” and add the bold line.

Section “Device”

Identifier “Default Device”

Option “NoLogo” “True”

Option “RegistryDwords” “EnableBrightnessControl=1″

EndSection

And now your brightness control is working in next login!"

I've used Ubuntu on four different brands, that were mine, and a couple of installs for people. The buttons worked fine.

My own machines:

IBM T43i -volume, brightness, LED light and network disable

Dell Studio 1537 -Volume, web browser, brightness, CD eject, sleep, media player.

Acer 4250 -Volume, brightness, media player, network disable

Toshiba C655D -Volume, brightness and network disable

Compaq Armada M7000 -Volume, brightness

The only thing I never could make work on any of these machines was the finger print reader on the Dell. I found an app that was supposed to work but, I was going to have to write some code to make it work.

Fn, or 'function', is a modifier key on many keyboards, fairly on laptops, used in a compact format to combine keys that are normally saved separate. that's normally got here across on laptops, with the aid of fact that an entire-sized keyboard may well be complicated to slot in a computing device chassis. it is likewise present in lots of finished-sized 'multimedia' and 'place of work' keyboards, named F-Lock key. that's in particular for the objective of changing show or audio settings at as quickly as, consisting of brightness, assessment, or volume, and is held down alongside side the perfect key to alter the settings. Yes, they will work. On my Ubuntu they work at least, no prog's or drivers were needed.
