Question:
How do I create a text hyperlink in Word 2003 when there is a very long URL address?

I have a Word 2003 document that I need to add a relatively long URL hyperlink to (the hyperlink consists of 258 characters w/spaces) but when pasting the URL into the address bar of the hyperlink window - part of the URL address gets cut off. Even if I can get the address bar to accept all of the characters by manually typing them in – after I click OK to apply the link to my selected text, any parentheses within the URL are changed to a series of numbers and % making the link unusable.

Does anyone know if there is a URL hyperlink character limitation in Word 2003 and why Word would change some of the characters within the link after clicking OK?

Does anyone know of a work around to make this long URL work in Word? I really need this link added to my Word document so that I can convert the doc to a PDF file and upload it to the web. I am willing to change to a different text program if anyone can suggest something equivalent to Word.

Thanks so much for any help!

a simple solution is to use the tinyurl website. Basically this website allows you to type a very looooonnnngg URL into their database and they will assign it a very tiny url that you can then use in your hyperlinks. When someone clicks the tinyurl, it gets redirected to your long url automatically.

and it's completely free... :-)))

feel free to play / test it at

it's the same thing that a lot of news sites (such as Yahoo) use instead of posting very long urls in their stories.
