I don`t know how I`ve done it but I have deleted the `file` menu from my microsoft windows word programme. Whenever I type a new word document the `file` menu from the top bar is missing. The others are there, edit, tools etc, but file is not. This is making it next to impossible for me to `save as`. Any ideas how to get it back? I`m running Windows XP

Try this:

1. Press ALT/V followed by ALT/T. A menu will pop up.

2. Select Customize at the bottom.

3. Click the Toolbars tab.

4. Select the “Menu Bar” item in the list box.

5. Click the Reset button.

6. Click OK for the verification dialog box.

7. Click Close.

Hopefully, that will do it.

Right click in an Open area of the top toolbar, and make sure you have the required toolbars selected.

If you search your "My Documents" folder for "normal.dot" - delete the file - it will reset the word global template and should restore the toolbars.
