At one time I had a duel boot machine and found that XMMS had the best sound playback quality of all of them. Was very surprised by this as I'd thought mp3 players were essentially the same in terms of quality. There are plugins to play all sorts of mpegs, flash, avi, etc. Havn't really tried those as I use Xine for that.
I believe there is a windoze version of XMMS, though most windoze users use freeamp a free clone of winamp or a free version of winamp. I have seen XMMS blow them both away on the exact same hardware on a duel boot machine.

Starting with mp3 players. Ipod is a fad. Dont get me wrong its a good player but its just a cultural phenomenon and its not the best. Sandisk the complany that makes removable storage media (floppy, disks, sd cards etc) has an mp3 player which is way better than the ipod. May also want to check out creative zen. Anyways now that video players have come out getting a dedicated mp3 player is cheaper.
When it comes to the video (mp4) its really about your budget. If you want something cheap thats good i would suggest an archos player. Go to archos.com and find out whats right for you. They have the best selection and most variety. Ipod video has not got great reviews for the video feature so i would skip that unless you really want an ipod. You can also to go to microsoft website and check out media center and other windows compatible devices. Kinda expensive but they are really good.
Hope this helps.

Well it all depends on the nitty gritty of the Mp3, mp4 player, things like Audio format compatibility, Capacity, Display, Prise, and other much more obscure stats like Battery life and, Quality of Display and Endurance
but always remember It's Quality not Quantity (e.g.fads like iPod.)
