how can you eliminate the gap at the end of the page so that there isn't so much white space, especially since there is more text available on the next page?

Try using "endnotes" instead of footnotes. This is much easier if you have the new Microsoft Office 2007.

What I do is set the bottom margin to O in Page SetUp.
A message pops up: 'One or more of the margins are set outside the printable area of the page. Choose the Fix button to increase the appropriate margins.' Click on Fix and you will be left with the lowest margin that your printer can handle and the white gap over the footnotes will be reduced.

You can't. At least not that I know of. That's just the way MS Word does business.
