Creating a restore point will NOT work for a new OS. You can create a new disk from scratch though, you only ever need to order a new one if you're computer is completely unusable. it's simple just follow these steps http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-create-a-windows-8-recovery-disk/

Though a better option would probably be installing windows 10 on an external device and booting from it to test it out before making a final decision. This is simple just have a large enough USB or external hard drive handy and when you go to download the upgrade then change the directory path to the external. (you can also use a disc which I do not recommend) finally restart your computer with the drive inserted. It should ask if you would like to boot from then go to boot options by pressing F12 and selecting the external drive to boot from. It should automatically boot up as if you have downloaded windows 10. If you like it then you can easily overwrite the windows 8.1 on your computer by re-downloading it normally, then you will have the external source as a backup (the same as the disk that comes with it) and be happy. If you don't like it then you can easily shut down your computer and remove the external (do not remove it while the computer is on if you have booted from it!) and restart the computer normally and vwalla windows 8.1! then reinsert the external and delete the files and folders containing 10.

I wouldn't bother with win 8.1 just upgrade to windows 10 - you have 30days to roll back. You can't install windows 10 on an external drive

Create a restore point on your computer before you change it and if you have a backup drive, do that also. From what I seen it claims you have 30 days to change it back. I do not recommend windows 10 at all. If you have programs-apps-browsers you like -it might not be compatible with windows 10 so it will get removed. It happened to me. I didn't like their browser either. Get some more opinions first.

We are M$. Resistance is futile. Your puters and lappies will adapt to service us. We will add your technology to our own. M$ has announced that Windows is NOT a top priority. Pushing people to use the cloud and mobile has become their main focus now. The truth about 10 is coming out.

Before downgrading to 10, you should know what you're getting into.

Windows 7 and 8.1 is far better than 10. Windows 10 is far better at being spyware then any OS previously released to date.

From Toms's Hardware:

When Microsoft created Windows 10, it tied in numerous monitoring and data collection tools. The operating system is capable of gathering your search history, web usage, Windows Store usage, details of what applications you use, voice recordings, emails, geographic information and just about anything else that is on your PC. This information is gathered in part for improving Windows-based services, but it is also used for market research and advertising purposes.

This is why M$ is pushing 10 hard because it means a big increase in their profit margarine when they sell the info they collect on you. That is why it is FREE. If you're not paying for it, you’re not the customer, you’re the product being sold. They have seen the profits that the smart phone makers are raking in by spying on their user so M$ decided to emulate that and cripple the desktops, laptops so they can do the same. That's why they built a back door in it so you can't stop the OS with a firewall from phoning home. They spend years coping anything that Apple did. Hence we got Windows 8. Now they are going copy the smart phone industry and and force everyone to use APP. If you're not paying for it, you’re not the customer, you’re the product being sold.

With Windows 10, M$ owns your system.

YOU can no longer pick the updates you want installed.

THEY can choose which drivers are installed.

THEY can choose what THEY want on your system.

THEY even installed a backdoor in it so THEY can SPY on you at all times.

To show how bad Windows 10 really is, take a look at the chart below. You can see at the end of April, 7 dropped roughly 4% of its market share. 10 only rose 1.2%, meaning those who system broke and could not find a 7 system did not run to 10. 8.1 actually gained .3% and the rest went to other OSes. Meaning Vista, 2000, NT, 3.1, various flavors of OS X and Linux grab a big share of those who left 7 and did not and would not use 10.

At the end of May Windows 10 limped up 2.09% and 8.1 lost 1.08% and Windows 7 managed to regain .75%. You have to give credit to M$ for its malware like Get Windows free window. It help trick those who had gone back to 8.1 into being downgraded to 10 again. Amazing the 7 users manage to regroup and avoid the malware behavior that tricked so many into downgrading to 10 again. M$ should, but wont see how bad 10 is and will continue to use every means possible to try to save 10. The people are speaking with their feet and running away from it as fast as they can and trying to avoid the malware like behavior of M$.

Lets take a look at how how 10 made the biggest increase in its market share since its release. They changed the Get Windows 10 Free screen into behaving like malware. When the window opens to offer you 10 for free and you click the red x to close the window, that is the same as excepting the installation date. Even tho in the past clicking the red x turn it down.

From Toms Hardware

Now, as we near the end of the free upgrade period, Microsoft’s malware-like upgrade system is becoming even more intrusive by autoscheduling upgrades to Windows 10. I noticed that the Windows 10 upgrade reminder pop-up on a Windows 7 PC was no longer asking me to upgrade; instead, it’s now informing me that it has already scheduled an update for May 17.

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-10-auto-schedules-updates,31802.html

M$ claims to have changed this malware like behavior but we got to wonder what other tricks they will deploy to trick and strong arm people into downgrading to 10.

We all thought Windows 8 would be the worse OS M$ would release and they learned there lesson. They made some good improvements in 8 when they released 8.1. At that point we thought M$ was on the path to redemption. Then they come along with 10 and proved us wrong. You got to admit tho, they thought this out. They first developed a OS so bad that just about every one hated and only got 23% of the user to move to it, Windows 8. Most of them had no choice when buying a new puter. With everyone thinking that M$ couldn't make one worse they release Windows 10. People hated 8 so bad they jumped on the FREE OFFER for Windows 10 before they realized that it is spyware masquerading as an OS.
