Question:
system recovery?
2007-07-17 22:23:39 UTC
Hi, my laptop computer is completely messed up. I don't have a virus but my system registry is all messed up. I can't access the internet on it to download and pay for any registry fixing software, like registryfix or regcure etc. So i was told I have to erase my whole computer, but I don't know how to clear everything. I have a laptop so I wasn't given many mircrosoft disks, I just had to burn my system recovery to a dvd when I first bought my computer. And that is the only disk i have for my computer except my virus protection. So I was wondering if any of you knew what to do, because my computer freezes and crashes and I can't even open my internet explorer anymore. I can't afford to buy a whole new computer so please tell me how to restore my computer! Thank you everyone!

If this is a Dell

Using Dell PC Restore by Symantec

NOTICE: Using Dell PC Restore permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any applications or

drivers installed after you received your computer. If possible, back up the data before using PC Restore. Use PC

Restore only if System Restore did not resolve your operating system problem.

NOTE: Dell PC Restore by Symantec is not available in all countries or on all computers.

Use Dell PC Restore by Symantec only as the last method to restore your operating system.

PC Restore restores your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer.

Any programs or files added since you received your computer—including data files—are permanently

deleted from the hard drive. Data files include documents, spreadsheets, e-mail messages, digital photos,

music files, and so on. If possible, back up all data before using PC Restore.

To use PC Restore:

1 Turn on the computer.

During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.

2 Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press .

IF YOU DO NOT PRESS IN TIME, LET THE COMPUTER FINISH STARTING, AND THEN RESTART THE

COMPUTER AGAIN.

NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.

3 On the next screen that appears, click Restore.

4 On the next screen, click Confirm.

The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.

5 When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.

NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.

6 When prompted, click Yes.

The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that

appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the

computer was turned on.

7 Click Next.

The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.

8 After the computer restarts, click OK.

Go to Microsoft Updates as you now will be WAY out of date.

You just have to boot from the recovery cd/dvd in the drive and follow the prompts. You should be fine.

You could also try booting from a full Windows disc and doing a repair installation.

BUT you need to get any valueable data off that drive first!! You probably don't even need data recovery software, but you will need to get that drive out of the laptop and into a desktop probably with a 2.5" adapter... and copy the doc, jpgs, mp3, outlook.pst, etc... onto another drive on a healthy computer to be moved back later. Alternatively if you cannot find a cable at your local stores you can buy a exernal drive kit for 2.5" drives - these are the ones powered by the USB port... use that kit to install the drive into and connect to a healthy computer for saving your data. There is possibilty that your hard drive needs replacing as well... you should be able to get an 80 gig for less than $50.

I just had a laptop drive crash and start clicking... so I just popped out the drive and put in a new replacement and booted off the recovery dvd... clicked the mouse a few times and hit enter... and it was done in a bout 30 minutes. back to out-of-the-box state. I skipped saving the data since there was none... it basically is just used for internet access. After the recovery it was better than new since the new drive was faster and I went ahead and added some ram also. I am typing on that laptop now.

Good luck. With a laptop, treat your recovery disc like gold.

ok first put in the recovery disk then shut down ur computer

turn it on and right in the beginning there will be an option that says boot menu go there it is one of the f buttons or esc. from here u will get a menu and find the disk drive were the disk is and select that. this will boot from the recovery disk and from there just follow all the steps and this will restore ur computer back new just like when u bought it. ALL FILES WILL BE ERASED. so u might want to save some of the on external memory sources like a flash drive or external hard drive.

this should fix all of your problems
