from Windows XP. Do I need to save everything I have on Windows XP before I upgrade? IE: Things in "my documents", any programs I've downloaded. Will I need to reinstall My Microsoft Office? Thanks for any advice!

Hi, if u r upgrading u don't need to backup anything, but I recommend a new install. Still just in case back up ur data. If u r doing a new install u will need to reinstall all ur software. If u r upgrading then download Windows Vista upgrade advisor from http://www.microsoft.com and it will tell u whether ur system is ready for Vista or not. I hope I helped, and contact me for any more help.
Good Luck and take care!

An upgrade may not cause a data loss, but why take the chance. In addition to regular backups of the system (or at least your valuable data), making a backup prior to any system maintenance is a good practice.
I do favor doing a fresh install of any operating system over an upgrade. While an upgrade makes every attempt to preserve user profiles and application configurations, they also tend to leave a lot of obsolete files on the system. Rather then leaving the clutter, take it as a good opportunity to clean things up.
** Edit **
Oh, may I ask why you are upgrading to MS Vista? I have both Vista and XP and my project this weekend is to purchase a hard disk to test XP on my new PC (that came with Vista pre-installed). Comparing Vista on my new PC to XP on my several year old system makes Vista seem like a slow bloated OS. I have only left Vista on for the last couple of months because I really wanted to give it a chance (figuring I'd have to go to it eventually anyway). Unfortunately I haven't seen any compelling reason to use it when XP seems to out perform it and is more supported by third party developers.

You should do a clean install to avoid problems...this means you will lose everything. You need to back up all files and you will need to reinstall all programs.
