What's the best free movie making software? (NOT windows movie maker)?

I've tried making a movie on windows movie maker and it just isn't practical, because the pictures and videos won't show on any other computer, so i need a different software for making movies.

If you have XP, Windows Movie Maker should already be installed on your computer. And it's a better copy than what's available with Vista because it allows you to capture video from a webcam. Run "Help and Support" and type in Windows Movie Maker and it'll show you where it is.

Make sure you take the final step in Movie Maker, and save it as a MOVIE (.wmv file), not as a project you're still working on. It should then be available to be viewed online, on other computers, etc.

the macs have a program called imovie. it is the best editer/producer ever. period.
