What is the point of some of the Fonts in Microsoft word?

Ones like "MS Reference Speciality, which turns text into what looks like fractions and numbers, or "Windings" which is just odd shapes etc, these are just two examples of many and i fail to see the point of them, anyone any ideas

They are all produced for a special purpose many years ago. While today you and I don't find muct use for them they remain for backwards compatibility.

Wingdings was provided as a TrueType font providing symbols that were not available in other font sets at the time.

You can see a history in wikipedia.

Everyone has different taste and so would like a wide variety of fonts for typing. With regard to symbols like Windings and webdings, I use these a lot for bullet points and for enlarging to use as images etc. It just depends how you use your computer and to what level as to what you would actually use. As an IT tutor and working in all programs and constantly creating new training courses, I use an awful lot of these to you 'pointless' things. Remember, some people need equations, mathetmatical symbols, engineering, statistical, financial and of course different languages.

they are based on printing fonts and are included on a "if you need them basis"

some are use full to mathematicians and scientists

some are foreign languages

some are just decorative

hope this helps

The point is to have symbols or characters that are not in the standard character set.

I hate them as well.

I don't understand what they are suppose to mean.

Who would actually use them in a document?

Confusing...
