Linux mint is the most reliable distro for home users. I like the XFCE the most.

Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon is the cream of the crop for windows users.

Edit: Also look at Linux Mint XFCE edition. That may actually "look" more like w7. Menu on bottom left.

There are mounds of libre software available for GNU/Linux. There is not as much libre software available for Windows, although it has a lot more proprietary software. Some proprietary software, such as Google Earth, Skype, and Opera, as well as libre software, such as Firefox, OpenOffice, and Apache, run on both Windows and GNU/Linux.

It isn't

Linux is a Unix derivitive OS and is built ground up as a network, multi user system with proper layered access securities.

Windiws even as of 8 (assuming 10 also as a derivitive) is a si ngle user environment patched with multiuser and network functionality hence the multitude of holes not to mention NTFS.

How about Zorin, or Q4 os? Q4 OS uses the Trinity desktop envionment TDE witch is a fork of KDE 3.5 just like Mate is a fork of Gnome 2.5 aka gnome 2. Q4 aims for the Windows XP cround and even uses .esh pacakges that have installers like XP's and their is even a 3rd party theme tool that makes it look like win 2000, win xp,win vista, win 8, and older versions are in devlopement like a win 3.1 look. Q4os is based off of Debian 8 and they just had their LTS version came out. They even have a clinet tool that installs all the programs for you that they have on their site. They also have a basic package manager. They also have skripts to isntall KDE 4 and XFCE. Their distro can run with less then 500 MB of RAM and is good for old pc's and people who just want a Light linux distro. If you are ok with treaking I recomend Linux Mint 17.2 XFCE eddion with the noobslabe theme ppa. I would not recomend the Cinnamon version as it is the most unstable right now with Cinnamon 1.4-.1.6 lacking polish, also XFCE 12 has just come out so you would might want to add that ppa as whell.

Zorin is the most like Win 7. In fact has a Win 7 Mode that will make its menus and everything look similar.

But the best Linux distro is Linux Mint. It's not very different from Windows--you would feel pretty much at home. But it comes with more stuff
