If you have the money, and would like it invest it on Microsoft Office, go ahead.

But, I would strongly recommend LibreOffice. It is a fork of the OpenOffice project (by Oracle, formally handled by Sun Microsystems, two very respectable companies and innovators in the tech field).

LibreOffice is open source, and free! LibreOffice is very compatible with Microsoft Office, and also supports the .odt file format, and has many of the great features of other office suites such as MS Office.

LibreOffice can be downloaded from the website here -> http://www.libreoffice.org/

If you're wondering whether it will harm your computer or not, I can assure you, it is a safe download, one that you will not regret. It will take some time to download and install though, depending on your Internet connection and other factors.

If you have any other questions, edit your question and I'll edit my response.

Glad to help.

Edit: LibreOffice is available on Windows, Mac OS, and most Linux distributions. :)

I think it really depends if you want to buy the license and software for Microsoft Office. It is a fantastic suite of programs that work really well in windows environments.

LibreOffice is an open source comparable suite of tools that are free to use, and work with MS Office file extensions. I've used LibreOffice in the past, and have it installed on most of my home computers.

I do find however, that I've been able to solve most of my personal document needs with Google docs as opposed to any installed software.

LibreOffice. Personally, I cant afford the cost of MS stuff, & need a good office suite. If you only need a word-processor, then try AbiWord, a FOSS MSWord equivalent.

I was using OpenOffice, but when most of the devs left to set-up the Open Document Foundation & forked OO, I moved as well. The only thing that OO/LO don't do as well as MSO, is VB scripting.

StarOffice is the original of OO, & still available as continualyy developed commercial software, much cheaper than MSOffice

(StarOfice 9.0 = $14.95, MSOffice 2010 = $279.95, plus a fee for other computers)

LibreOffice...only thing you will not get is the "Ribbon" (which I personally do not like)

So, thumbs up to Libre office or its parent OpenOffice!

@Austin, alot of the devs from open office didnt like the way it was going so they started making libreoffice

Microsoft office is the most polished but they both do what is needed. So pick which one you like better

MS Office. I've never heard of Libre Office in my life, and I've been around the internet...TRUST me.

Edit: OH!!! It was OpenOffice? Oh...LOL! I've heard of that...now I feel a bit stupid, but that's okay.
