I have a problem with Microsoft Office "Word." Somehow something has changed its setting and every time I try to type something it puts periods after every space.

I have tried opening a new document, opening an old document, and even uninstalling and reinstalling the program, but it is still the same. This is obviously a feature that can be swiched off, but I don't know how. Can you help me?

You may have activated a feature in Word that allows you to display formatting marks. Please do the following.

1. Choose Tools, Options, View.

2. Look in the "Formatting Marks" section.

3. Verify whether there is a check mark next to "Spaces" or next to "All." If so, then this feature has been turned on. You can uncheck all the items here if you wish.

Please note that many Word users find it useful to see formatting marks such as spaces, tabs, paragraph marks, etc..

Another alternative is to leave these items selected, then from the main screen click on the icon to the left of the Zoom setting. It looks like a paragraph mark. This is called the "Show/Hide" button. Click the button one to turn the feature off or on.

There are three big reasons I can think of for this to happen. If the document is huge, then Word might take a long while to open it. You hint that it used to open reasonably quickly, so that probably isn't the case unless you've added some large images or similar recently. Another reason would be stuff embedded in the document. Sometimes images or clippings from other document types are embedded using a technology called OLE. OLE keeps links to the original document and programs used to display and edit the items, sometimes these links break and Word will spend a little while figuring out the links are gone. My money would be on this being a document that you edit a little and then File Save. In that scenario Word doesn't always save the whole document, it just save the changes you've made. When it loads the document it loads what was ages ago and then makes all the edits you've made since. Normally you don't notice, it happens very quickly, but in extreme circumstance it can start taking a while. If it is that later, then the solution is to use File Save As to a fresh file. You can then rename the two files you have so the newly saved document has the name you're familiar with.
