Question:
Question about sorting data in Excel?
2012-03-07 07:59:45 UTC
I have a list of of sales contracts that have various contract end dates. Some contracts are from the same company. What I am trying to do is sort by by company name (keep all contracts from each account together) but sort by most recent contract end date to indicate which account is up for renewal first. I've tried pivot tables, grouping and subtotals...any help would be appreciated!!

Sorry if this is confusing... a little difficult to explain

Thanks in advance :)

Is this possible?

Pivot tables should do exactly what you need. Make sure you use the Company name as the first field you add to the table, then the date after that.

I might be way underestimating your problem but have you tried adding a sorting level when you sort? For example, you’d go to “Data” and then “Sort”. In the sort setup window you would set it to sort by the column that has your company names but ALSO add a level below the primary sort to have it do a secondary sorting by the end date (oldest to newest). That way the companies would remain grouped together with the one the closest to the end date listed first for each company “group” kind of like this:

Company 1 | 3/7/2012

Company 1 | 4/10/2012

Company 1 | 7/15/2012

Company 2 | 3/9/2012

Company 2 | 6/6/2012

Company 2 | 10/9/2012

Is that what you would want the result to look like?

Just checking to make sure the solution to what you are asking isn’t so simple that expert advisors would overlook it.
