I updated Xp last night by adding SP2 (directly from MS site) I have not used this PC in a while. This morning I tried updating to SP3 and I got the "Access is denied" error message. Anyway, the problem is the computer now will not even let me get to the desktop! I tried running safe mode (reboots) I tried the "last good configuration" (reboots) i've pretty much looked at every single posting I can find. I even spoke with someone at Gateway (their advice, do a "clean" update of Xp) I even tried the Xp boot CD, under recovery mode, and I cannot get a prompt since I get the error (invalid password) no matter what password I type! I have a lot of files/mp3s I would rather keep, but if I have to do a clean sweep then I guess I will. I was just hoping someone out there could tell me something new to try. Thanks!

In the future, when you seek for help, please do not forget to mention what kind of pc do you have. Anyway, lets start. Go to the system bios by turning on your pc while holding or F1, F2,F12, or Delete key dpending of what kind of computer you have ( that's why it is important to provide information about your PC ) Make sure the pc is not outdated if so change the date using your keyboard.Click on boot options and make sure your cd rom is the first boot following by your hard drive. put your cd installation disk on you pc.Press F10 to save the change. When prompted, press enter to boot from cd. Follow the instructions like L to delete a partition, C to create one, F8 to format your hard drive, etc.Just follow the screen instructions. You need also your product key that came with your disc. It's 25 mixed letters and numbers. Anyway if you need mor help you still can help me charlottepcdoctor@yahoo.com . We can help you. It's free of charge. We can assist you ( while using chat or IM) with the procedures.

OS is locked down? Genuine OS software?

can't get to desktop, can't reboot in safe mode, last good configuration, those are some signs aside from viruses....

Edit: Just asking. No need to get all cranky! Do a clean install seem to be best at this point since you don't have your correct password....There maybe a way to get around pasword protection...Try to search answers online. I'm sure. OK!
