When opening a .gif image file, whether from a file on my computer or via the internet, my favourite web browser, Opera is unable to open it. I know the problem is on my machine alone, since this version of Opera works well on a friend's machine. Hoewever, I have uninstalled and re-installed Opera, and upgraded it with it's new releases, and the problem persists.
Instead,of displaying the webpage, it opens a new blank tab with the url file://localhost/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Owner/Local%20Settings/Application%20Data/Opera/Opera/profile/cache4/temporary_download/p-01-0VIaSjnOLg%20(67)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1)%20(1).gif

Repeatedly.
It opens about 20 such blank tabs.How can I fix this?

At the bottom right of Opera, there's a camera icon. Click on the drop arrow button and select Show Images.

Alternatively, you can go to View>Image>Show Images.

Maybe you could try going to Start>Control panel>Internet options>Advanced>Under Multimedia make sure the "Show Pictures" is checked.

Make sure that you do not have any programms that block images from showing.

If this fails, you could try re-installing Opera.

You could also try

Tools->Preferences->Advanced->

Downloads

selected Mime type "image/gif"

Edit-> Chose "Open with "Opera"

Hope this helps.

Are you sure you don't have a browser hijacker? Some of those .gif files are malicious.

Run a quick scan with this:

I think this is a virus problem?try to scan your system using a virus guard.
