95 and 98 are defunct but the 9x interface was a big step up from 3.11,

xp is nothing special

vista has integrated security but is plagued by peni5 users who think they are pc experts but cant find drivers etc

I use vista and have no complaints

everything works fine

by gaming is fine even if because i have always had newish graphics cards and high amounts of memory

as long as you have a good spec pc youll be fine with vista, im perfectly happy clicking allow when i open programs as it ensures i dont have spyware and other malicious crap self opening which happens loads with xp

Anyone who says vista is full of bugs is the computer equivalent of a sun newspaper reader or pub football expert whos never seen a live game

Anyone who says its not compatible with programs doesnt know how to use compatibility mode, exactly the same as you have to for a 95/98 game

anyone who says its not compatible with hardware...Microsoft dont write drivers, hardware manufacturers do, it their fault if they havnt written one but theyre not interested in writing drivers when they can sell you a new piece of gear

bear one more thing in mind, people with bad comments on here are probably using pirated software, the best OS is the legal one =)

Windwos 95 and 98 should be out of the question, since support is no longer available.

Windows XP is probably the most stable out of all of these, though if you care more about graphics/design than productivity, Vista is the thing for you.

There isn't much difference between XP Home and XP Professional. Professional has some advanced features, such as joining a domain, which most home users don't even use.

On the other hand, there is much difference between the Vista editions. While the overall features are the same, Home Basic doesn't have the new Aero effects, such as the transparent windows, switching through Windows in 3D, etc. Look at the comparison chart below for more info on the different editions.

All in all, I'd recommend Windows XP :]

Would you buy a TV that has technology that is 7-12 years old instead of buying a TV that has all the latest technology?

Besides, when MS comes out with a major OS such as Vista in a new few years you will not have a choice to stay behind because developers are not going to develop new software for old platforms.

Also, litterally all the reasons you currently hear about why not to go to Vista, is exactly the reasons people gave when XP came out.

Answer: Vista.

XP. For Sure. Windows XP Home Edition In Fact.

Vista Will Be Good, In About 1Year. Once They Get A Service Pack Out And Everyone Can Afford An Intel Core 2 Duo With 3GB Of Ram.

But Its XP At The Moment

My desktop runs on XP Home service pack 2. My laptop which I bought recently runs on Vista Home Premium. I have to say I love the new graphics on Vista and although I thought Id have trouble downloading things like Yahoo Messenger etc its amazing how quickly firms have responded to Vista with their software. Although I wouldn't be without my desktop running on XP as Ive got a quite a few games that run on XP only.

I love the gadgets on Vista sidebar!

Windows 95 and 98 are obsolete and no longer supported. I would not consider these.

Windows Vista is new and there are likely to be bugs in it that need to be discovered and fixed. Whenever you bring somethign out as complex as this, unforeseen issues will arise and need attention. No one can predict these despite the amount of pretesting - and nothing substitutes for a mass user base. This is not a criticism but a statement of fact. I would wait for service pack 1 to come out on Vista before I bought it if I could.

XP has been around and debugged. Updates will still come forth but they will not be as elaborate. At this time, I would use XP Pro.

6 - 12 months from now, I probably will consider Vista.

I would go for XP, Vista seems to have loads of teething problems. It may get better in a few months time but I would stick with XP in the meantime. Good luck!!

I would choose XP professional. In the near future Vista will be better theres just a lot of bugs thats still wrong with vista I wouldn't think about purchasing it until they have a service pack available

thing is that vistas had a lot of problems lately, and on a smallish not very good/average computer it doesnt work well. its also going to be a bit of a problem if you have 2 operating systems running on your computer.

i suggest keep XP professional... vista will be better in some time, but not now

If you're a gamer, don't get Vista. It takes up all the hardrive.

I currently have XP Home Edition,it works great,I love it. I used to have 98 but we got rid of it...it was bad.

Hi!

There's no such thing. for most users XP is just fine. If you want something fancy use Vista, in case you have a top of the line system. I'd go for XP for software compatibility.

Good luck!

95 : too old... (you wont find drivers easylly for the things u need)

98 : too many bugs..

vista : omg run away, too heavy (needs like 26% of your RAM just to run the windows, with no Xtra app on backround), many bugs, and needs drivers for every little **** u connect, even for flash discs.

i vote for win XP pro with sp2
