The XP bootloader overwrites the windows 7 bootloader.
You have to install XP first.
then install windows 7.
windows 7 will detect XP
and take it in to account when writing the new bootloader.
Trying to edit the win7 bootloader after reinstalling it
by doing a start up repair is useless.

When creating a dual boot system, you always have to install the oldest operating system first. Now Windows XP has overwritten the boot loader of Windows 7. If you would have installed them the other way around, you would have had the choice to boot either Windows XP or Windows 7 via the Windows 7 bootloader. To solve your issue now, start your computer from the Windows 7 installation disc and choose Repair. This will write the Windows 7 bootloader back to your hard drive.

Hi, First Install win xp and make a at least 3 partition 1. c: 2 d: 3. e: So your win xp will be in c drive default. Now insert win 7 DVD in Drive and run setup and select D drive to install win 7. Do not format c drive here. if you like to format d drive you can or even delete d drive partition and create it again. and contine to install win 7.
After completing win7 installation it will ask for win xp or win 7.
SO your dual booting is ready.

certain. Do your partitioning (with somewhat better room for 7) and deploy XP FIRST! 7 will create the Boot Configuration archives record and contemporary a range show each and every time you boot. words to the sensible: a million) avert something fancy with dynamic disks, GPD, and so on. 2) once you've put in each and each of the updates and your extra classes on both platforms, poke round to ensure each thing is okay. Reboot both platforms. bypass to the Backup and fix middle in 7 and make an finished pc backup that contains XP, the image will be huge although this is going to ward off time and subject matters contained in the destiny. 3) I recommend choosing IE8 in the course of the updates. It likely is on 7 already. i'm spoke in Vista lingo. 7 might want to be a similar or similar. better questions, e mail.

That's exactly what happens when you install an older OS on a PC with a newer OS pre-installed.
