What is the best FREE linux distribution to ensure support for multimedia playback (MP3) and easy setup of internet connection (and browsing)? It is a cable type, broadband modem that I am going to use to connect to the internet through a LAN card. I have had some issues with Free Spire in the past with acquiring address from the cable modem automatically, and I had to restart the PC so I could get it to work next time Linux loads - so thats not an option :) . I am now doubting in between OpenSUSE and Ubuntu Studio (because regular Ubuntu does not have native support for playing MP3 ... ).
Nine answers:
Linux Mint 11

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 Main Edition which is based upon Ubuntu 10.04 Its easy to install and use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled (including multimedia codecs)

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 9 and can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

I myself use Ubuntu, but you might want to install Linux Mint instead. Mint is basically Ubuntu under the hood, but a more polished and refined version of it. Mint has multimedia support preinstalled (in Ubuntu you have to install the codecs yourself).

I use Mint at work. It picked up the Ethernet right away. So you mean you have a cable modem? I think that should work just fine.

The USB broadband modems (the ones that look like flash drives) cause some trouble with Ubuntu at least, but in Mint even it worked perfectly after the set-up.

So, Linux Mint is what you want. Trust me on this!

Couldn't agree more with those recommending Mint. It is a great distro, and it works right out of the box. None of the extra work of Ubuntu required.

Start with Ubuntu if you're new to Linux. It's the easiest distro to learn and has an excellent online community where you can seek help and find solutions to almost any errors you encounter.

I use both openSUSE and Ubuntu. I prefer openSUSE but I believe that Ubuntu would be better in your situation, "it just works".
