The file system preinstalled in Macbook pro is a nightmare when trying to find files in my Desktop or Documents. Is there a better filemaker or organiser I could instal for free on my OSX system which will allowe me to organise my files and find them more effectively? I like the Android application I use for my phone called Astral File management but obviously that's just a phone app and I need a file organiser for my laptop. Anything similar would really help. thank you

Path Finder: http://cocoatech.com/

Leap: http://www.ironicsoftware.com/leap/

ForkLift: http://www.binarynights.com/

Those are the big 3. I don't know of any free ones at all, sorry.

In what way is it a nightmare? What do you want to achieve that you are unable to with the Mac OS? Type the first letter, or the first few letters, and hit tab to find a named item. Not sure what the file is called but remember it mentioned a particular word. Search that word with Spotlight and it will find the file. Use Smart folders to automatically group and sort your stuff.

We are not familiar with your Android thing. Try MuCommander. It can be set to work like Windows Explorer (makes separate alpha-numeric lists for directories and normal files). If you can please explain what it is about Finder that is nightmare-ish, that would go a long way towards getting a good answer.
