I recently got a Flip camera and all the files are in MP4 format. I want to edit my videos in Windows Movie Maker but I need a free program that will convert MP4 to any file that will work in Windows Movie Maker. Please no free trials because I don't know how long it'll be before I get an editing program that can edit MP4s :P I want a full version, not one that will only convert 75% of the file or has a watermark or will only convert videos up to 3 minutes long. I don't care what format it's in as long as it works in Windows Movie Maker. I have XP, by the way.

There are loads of these converters around, everyone has their own personal favorite, including me. Download a couple and see what works best for you.

I do a lot of conversions and some others I've tried don't do a good job at all, but I've found that Erightsoft's Super Converter is good. Their website at http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html is annoying as you have to find the download link on three different pages before it starts the download but it's worth it in the end.

The program allows you to import / export practically every multimedia format ever produced and control every aspect of the output and can extract just the video or audio from a video file.

Some people have reported problems with this software, but I've been using it extensively and it hasn't let me down. Then again, some people don't seem to be able to open Notepad without something going wrong.

Yes ,it's true many free converters :)

SUPER as mentioned from http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html is quite good but needs some

understanding of bitrates etc .The reason why the author made it so hard to find the download link

is to make you read through all the pages ,so as to understand what is does.

But here are the direct links (to last page and download_

http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html

http://www.erightsoft.info/GetFile.php?SUPERsetup.exe

at time of writing SUPER©.v2010.build.42(Nov.7,2010)

As to Format Factory -also mentioned before - be aware that it installs a toolbar.

Otherwise a good converter. Just uninstall toolbar if not wanted.

QuickMediaConverter http://www.cocoonsoftware.com/ is a bit simpler to use.

(Used to have donation nag ,not sure it still does ,but no trouble ,just ignore)

Since you need to convert to WMV format for WinMoviemaker,

you could also try this one http://www.wmvconverter.org/ (also portable version) presently v3.2

DL Links http://www.wmvconverter.org/download/wmvconverter_setup.exe

http://www.wmvconverter.org/download/wmvconverter_portable.exe

I have several more links incl the ones mentioned in other posts ,but this should do you for now :)

PS -Be aware that not every converter will convert to WMV format that Windows Movie Maker will accept.IOW, while the converted file will be .WMV ,it may not play or be joinable with other .WMV files. The reason is the the beginning or header may not be exactly what Windows MovieMaker requires. So you may have to experiment with the files and possibly different converters as well.

IOW, there is no absolute guarantee that every converted file will be accepted by WMM.

I know it's more than you wanted to know, but,

Thought you should know and be prepared for it ;)

HI, guys, as I know, windows movie maker supports wmv or mpeg2 videos well, so you need a right program to convert mp4 video files to the wmv or mpeg2 video files for WMM, but I don't think there is a freeware program can do that well, because I have tried many free programs, none of them can work well, some of them have many limits, some of them are poor quality, some of them even have virus, so now I am using a good and inexpensive program RZ Video Converter which can convert any videos or audios between different formats with good quality, such as convert mp4 videos to the right wmv or mpeg2 videos for WMM, etc. Yahoo or google search and download RZ Video Converter, hope it can help you.

Windows Movie Maker supports WMV format, so you have to convert MP4 to WMV before playing the video on Windows Movie Maker.

Tenorshare Video Converter is a good video converter program that supports all kinds of video and audio format conversion. and i personally use it. i like it cos of its simple interface and uncomplicated settings (though availabe), easy to use for a beginner like me. i also like it because it has this bit rate calculator, where you just indicate how big the file you want it to convert to, then it will do the compressing for you! plus it has a built-in player, since sometimes i view the video i edit (yes, tweak the brightness and contrast and stuff) before conversion. pretty good stuff, i would recommend it.

Perhaps u can try Foxreal Video Converter. I am using it, so great. It can convert between all format videos with excellent output quality. What's more, it adopts advanced audio and video sync technology, so great!

It is worth mention that Foxreal Video Converter supports CUDA acceleration to help you convert video with 500% faster conversion.

I help you find the download address, and I ensure you can easily solve your problem.

Hope it can help you!

Here are supportable formats for windows movie maker:

Video files: .asf, .avi(special profile for windows movie maker), .wmv

Movie files: .mpeg1, .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2

Audio files: .wav, .snd, .au, .aif, .aifc, .aiff

Windows Media files: .asf, .wm, .wma, .wmv

Still images: .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .jfif, .gif

MP3 format audio: .mp3

so, if you do not have the right format, try a converter to convert your video to .wmv which works well on windows movie maker. As far as I know, the video recorded by camera has high quality, and if you do not want to reduce the quality of your video, you should try a professional video converter, such as snowfox total video converter which could help you convert between various video / hd video formats.

want to try, just google “snowfox total video converter” to find it. or see the link below:

http://www.snowfoxsoft.com/video-converter.html

And here is the step by step guide on how to import video into windows movie maker:
