You cannot execute a UNix executable on anything other than Unix OS (or equivalent).
What's more likely is you got a Unix archive file, probalby GZIP or TAR, which can be unpacked by StuffIt Deluxe, a Mac program. However, as you gave a "generic description" that's about as much help as I can give you.

I encountered the similar problems that were captured on my PC laptop, by the time I mounted the same hard drive on my Macbook Pro, all files have changed their extensions from 'unix executable' my video files. To enable my Macbook Pro to read the files, I used Adobe Media Encoder CS5 to make the files readable as .mov or Quicktime. It is a very simple process. Simply drag all files into the Encoder window and press "Start Queue". Select the video files with '.mov' extensions and trash the 'unix executable files. I also noticed that Final Cut Pro 10.1 automatically imports the unix executable files and encode them. Adobe Premier Pro 5 also imports encodes them automatically but I noticed a slight change in the clip quality. Adobe Media Encoder would be your best bet for this.

Here is a good link where you can download winrar for here: http://bit.ly/1BooiXa
You can use winrar to decompress zip files and a bunch of other formats. Other good programs are 7zip and winzip but in my opinion winrar is the best one. Fuctionalities are pretty similar for all programs: basically you can decompress a file simply by right-clicking it and by choosing the destination folder.
Winrar is available for free under a trial licence. The good thing is the trial period never ends so you can use it for free with no limitations.
Winrar opens all formats like .zip, .rar, .7z, .iso, .tar, .jar etc. That's why I recommend it.

You can try the Video Converter for Mac, the most powerful Mac Video Converter for you to convert video on Mac OS X (Leopard supported). With Mac Video Converter, you can easily finish the conversion such as convert MPEG to AVI; convert AVI to MP4, so you need not to look for any single Mac AVI Converter or Mac MP4 Converter.
Just use the professional dvd ripper. I think with the iFunia dvd ripper you can easily chang the movie files into your Mac other files and can put on youe facebook.
