I know this isn't a very correct answer, but the easiest way to get an answer to your question, is to go to the top of this page, and put this in the Search Questions box. You'll be surprised at the number of answers, that have been already given! EDIT: Okay, let's read THESE pages together!

Do you use Windows now? The best way to find out the difference is to download a copy of Ubuntu Linux...

http://www.ubuntu.com/

Burn the image to a disc and pop it in your CD-ROM drive.

When you boot up you can boot into Linux (from the CD) and test drive it without installing anything. It's a great way to take it for a test run and I think you will like what you see.

I'd just like to second skurdj's answer - bear in mind though that if you try the ubuntu live CD, it will be a LOT slower than when running from HDD.

It's a lot lighter on system resources than windoze [less bloated], therefore once installed, it feels like you've got a new computer. EVERYTHING happens so much faster - including web browsing. Best of all, it's completely FREE. Many applications have Linux variants, and those that don't nearly have a free equivalent - one of the most well known is OpenOffice.org - an open source equivalent of MS Office.

The main drawback on Linux based systems is lack of support from major device manufacturers. That's not to say devices won't work, there's a plethora of 3rd party drivers, and many devices work immediately without the need for additional drivers.

EDIT: Ubuntu has a user friendly GUI just like Windows - it still has the command prompt, just as windows does. but you usually only use that for advanced needs.

Different incompatible coding. Can't run linux programs on windoze and can't run windoze on linux - unless you try to use virtual machines or other software, which may or may not work.

They both do the same things - just differently.

Linux is an operating system written primarily by the actual users. Windows is a bloated piece of spyware with fun little games included like BSOD
