You have to back up any important data on the computer currently, then acquire a copy of 64 bit Vista, confirm you have a 64bit motherboard etc, and reformat then install the 64 bit version of Vista, then transfer backed up data back onto PC.

You cant upgrade to 64bit unless you have a 64 bit CPU. You can buy one of them from best buy or newegg. It may make some incompatibilities but you can run the programs in compatibility mode. A better graphics card might be needed.if its built in to the motherboard you might have some problems but you might have an open PCI slot. Also you should just have to buy the 64 bit version from newegg or another store. Also if you buy it from newegg you should get an upgrade cupons for windows 7 when it comes out. Anyways the only Advantage from a 64 bit system is only better graphics and you can hold more Ram. That's about it.

No, you actually have to buy the 64 bit seperately.

You could d/l from Microsoft, but they are gonna rip you on the price.

What you could do is buy the Vista 64bit from Newegg.com which comes with a FREE upgrade to Windows 7 64bit when it comes out in October. It is actually quite a bargain because Windows 7 is gonna start at the $99 price level.

Edit: I'm not sure why you are being told that there are compatibility issues in Vista 64bit. There WERE compatibility issues in Windows XP 64bit, but NONE of these exist in Vista 64bit. So that's a non-issue, as long as your motherboard supports 64bit computing. (And I'm quite sure if you are asking for a 64bit OS, you have a 64bit processor) (: Why anyone would choose to run 32bit on a system capable of running 64bit is beyond me.

you could, but you would have to double check all your hardware is 64bit compatible, if it is yeah go ahead. Also some software that ran 32bit wont run in 64bit. So double check all that. Specially your ram~

This is view as different operating system, you will need to pay for that to upgrade. Yes, you can upgrade and download, but money is the issue. Are you able to get your tech and find out what he can do?

Why do you want 64bit anyway? It doesn't necessarily make things any faster or better. In fact it might slow things down and introduce more incompatibilities!
