If you are installing using dual boot ( meaning you have both, the xp and linux ) then you dont need to go back to xp because you already have it. But if you did install ubuntu over the xp, then you are screwed. You would have to format your hard disk to remove ubuntu, make sure you backup your data.

Good luck!

Actually its very easy because if you have the windows installation disk, windows formats and deletes everything which is foreign to it, before installation, but you have to select it to do so.

I've done it a few times, just remember to install the drivers as well after your windows re-installation.

If you install an operating system (ubuntu or xp) in place of another yes it formats and deletes it and replaces it with the new one (os).

If you dual-boot: remove the partition you installed it to

If you used Wubi: remove it from Add and Remove Programs in Windows

If you installed Ubuntu over the whole thing: Format your hard drive and reinstall XP

It's easy to remove but it does completely remove XP Assuming you didn't create a separate partition to install it into your files are gone and even if you did assuming you take it off (I HATE Windows and I still had to go back to it briedfly last summer) you are strongly advised to back up your files and keep an install disk handy.

Here is a good page about it:

http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_windows_xp_and_linux_xp_installed_first.htm

Read it now even if you did install it and create a bookmark so you can read it again before you do another install.

Did you know that you didn't have to install Ubuntu to try Linux? Live versions of Linux can be booted from a CD, DVD, or even flash drive and not write anything to your hard drive unless you allow it to. There are a number of live versions out there. Check out http://distrowatch.com/

for all the distos and some information about them. Lots of online information about Linux.

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 10.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint has a similar installer called mint4win (mint4win works the same as Wubi so the instructions outlined above are almost identical)

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

Linux Mint 9 Download

Linux Mint 9 User Guide Download pdf.

http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_isadora.php

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 9 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive
