ActiveX is a term Microsoft uses to describe a number of its COM technologies. However, when most people say "ActiveX", they are really referring to ActiveX controls, Microsoft's answer to Java applets. The two technologies are similar in that they are designed to be downloaded and executed by web browsers. The difference is that while ActiveX controls can interface with Microsoft Windows more effectively than Java, they offer very little cross-platform support.

ActiveX is a program that need to be installed in order to check the authenticity of the operating system. For example, if you try to download an update or any file from microsoft.com, it will give you a pop up on the top portion of the page and it will ask you to right click on it to install it. After it identifies that you are using a genuine version of operating system then it would let you download the file.

ActiveX is Microsoft's answer to allow someone to write code that can be used on both a "fat" client and a "thin" client. "fat" = a local desktop application, like Notepad, Word, etc. "thin" = an application that is running on a server somewhere else.

Usually one has to install and ActiveX control. In this case, it could be something like a pie chart tool to be used for a web site/page. Or anything else that someone could use.

Most companies avoid writing these anymore, due to the nature of having to have someone install it on their PC, and the fact that a Virus can be attached to the program.

The equivalent in the company Sun, could be considered a Java applet.
